Joana's Speed Leveling Tips/Tricks
The following lists tips and tricks that I have discovered while speedrunning 1-60 and may help you become faster at leveling in Classic/Vanilla WoW.
Try to avoid professions
If your goal is to level really fast, then you're gonna have to stop
worrying about professions, they will slow you down if anything. The only
profession I use is First Aid. If you are a casual player then learning the
professions can be a way for you to gain some extra gold on the
side to help you get your lvl 40 mount sooner.
Another thing to note is that I usually have to borrow gold from players when speedleveling on new servers (I pay them back in double) in order to buy my mount in the mid 40s. I do this to make up for the lack of professions as a way to get gold.
However, doing Hardcore, professions are generally worth doing as they can help keep you alive more efficiently.
Grind mobs on the way to quests
When moving around the game world from quest to quest, it is wise to grind on
all mobs along the way. You will simply level faster by doing so. In
Vanilla/Classic WoW there simply is not enough soloable quests in the game to get you
from 1-60 without needing to grind somewhat, but this largely depends on how
much rested XP you use through out the leveling process. When executing
the grinding along the way properly you will then be rewarded with needing
to grind less once the guide tells you to "grind to catch up".
This applies much more to Classic Era and Classic TBC than SoM or WotLk over level 20. Thanks to Classic SoM's +40% more XP from quest turn-ins this is much less important for that. But I still believe its important to grind on some mobs along the way with SoM / WotLK (at least to dump out your abilities/mana for some quick kills). For SoM you will be wanting to get to your questing areas faster.
Keep your food/drink updated ASAP
Always make sure you have the latest up to date food/drink, regenerating mana/life
faster from eating/drinking is VERY important to leveling faster. So as
soon as you hit 15/25/35/45 etc.., upgrade your food/water immediately. My
leveling guides will remind you at these levels to do so.
Also, 1-2 levels before you are about to turn those levels (15/25/35/45), try to preserve your mana more by stop using abilities that are not worth it as much to save time from drinking a drink that will soon be outdated. This means, for hunters, stop using Arcane Shot as much.
Hearthstone's cooldown ticks when logged out
Remember that the Hearthstone's
cooldown will still tick down even when logged out. This is important to
know since a lot of the time the guide will tell you to hearth and if there is
still a cooldown for it then you can logout to take a short break, then log back
in a bit later to hearth. This saves time and can help get you a better
/played time at the end while also allowing you to take some breaks IRL.
Use a bank/AH alt
Not Allowed In Unofficial Hardcore:
You should always have a bank/AH alt on every server you have a main character
on. This is VERY important. I consistently use the mail system as a "bank", Any
time im out questing and find a bunch of greens or items that will sell in the
AH, I DO NOT go to the AH with that character to put it in the AH, instead I
send them all to an ALT through the mailbox. Then with the ALT, ill put them in
the AH. Also, I strategically use the mailbox as a "storage system". For
example, I have a bunch of Silk Cloth in my inventory, that im going to use
later, but not now, instead of it wasting space in my inventory, ill send it to
my ALT, then from my ALT, i'll return it right back to my main, so it sits in my
mailbox, when I need it. Only use your actual Bank for mostly soulbound items,
use the mailbox to store everything else.
Plan ahead
While questing or killing
mobs, always know what you're going to do next. For mobs: as you are
fighting your current mob, look around to see which mob to go to next and which
abilities you should be using to be the most mana/energy efficient.
Auto-Run
Use Auto-Run a lot, you can still type and do other stuff while
auto-running.
/Played Time Tips
If your goal is to get a VERY good /played time to 60, then NEVER do BGs,
NEVER go to the AH, NEVER go AFK, NEVER go to the ARENA in STV.
Get well equipped at towns
Before I go out questing, I make sure I have plenty of food/water/bullets
or arrows/and repaired, so I can last hours before returning to town.
Use good Inventory management
Don't think just because your inventory is filled you have to go back to
town to empty it every time. I consistently destroy items to make room for quest
items or items that are more important or sell more. This also means to
try and memorize the price tags on all the items in the game as best as you can,
so you will be more knowledgeable on which items can safely be destroyed before
others.
My leveling guides now will tell players to bank items, such as quest items, to help free up bag space.
Use Auto-loot
Use the built in auto loot feature (if there is one). This can speed up leveling a lot,
since you won't have to manually loot every corpse. To enable this, go to
Interface Options, then put a check next to "Auto Loot Corpse".
Don't loot every mob!
If your goal is to level like a mad man, then don't
loot mobs that would waste too much time. Here are some looting tips to consider
for speedleveling:
- Hunters will tend to have a high chance to loot mobs from levels 1-9 since you will not have a pet and each mob will generally drop dead right where you are at.
- When you are on the way to a specific destination and the mob drops dead at a spot that is not on your path destination, then skip looting it.
- If your bags are full, then your need to loot is much less.
- if you are still trying to afford your level 40 mount, then looting is a higher priority. Once you have your mount and plenty of gold to spare then looting becomes less important.
- I find that from levels 50+ looting is simply time wasting for
speedleveling and I only loot mobs in this range if I know it will not cost
me much time or if I need to get quest items from these mobs.
Reduce downtime when building up First Aid
The prime time to build up First Aid
is when traveling on boats or zeppelins. This saves a lot of time.
Another great time to build up First Aid is when restocking at vendors, as
sometimes it can take up to a minute to sell items and reconfigure your
inventory, you can make bandages while doing that. Also make bandages
during escort quests.
Are Dungeons Worth it?
Many people have asked me if dungeons
(instances) are a waste of time. No, they are
worth doing, but only if you have a good group to do them. I personally skip
dungeons while racing myself to 60, cause I don't want to take the chance that
I will have a bad group. But if you're just playing casually, then I recommend
doing them. They are a very fun aspect of the game.
Consider skip leveling up new weapons
If you are actually doing a speedrun
then I generally recommend sticking with one type of weapon the
whole game. I usually choose to stick with staves the WHOLE game (at least
as a Horde player), even if I find an epic
whatever, I stick with staves, because it slows you down when you have to level up
new weapons. There are some great staff quest rewards along the way. Although if you
refuse this tip, then if you want to level up a new weapon faster, you can use
your abilities (which counts as extra weapon hits), such as disengage/raptor
strike/Mongoose Bite/Wing Clip for melee weapons, which will help level up your
weapons faster.
I suppose if I found an epic weapon that was significantly better than my previous weapon and if I can easily afford learning that weapon, then I would make the switch and probably spam Wing Clip Rank 1 (for hunters) to level it faster.
Memorize where to buy potions
Healing potions can prevent you from dying, which is huge for speedleveling.
Healing potions and (if your class uses them) Mana Potions can be bought from
various NPCs in the game world. It's important to remember who sells these
as it will allow you a cheap quick source for them. Keep in mind that
these items are on limited bought timers and they may not be available when
checking. View all the
NPCs that sell potions
for Classic WoW.
Don't waste gold
Through out all my speed runs I never buy
weapons/armor in the AH to use, I save my money so I have enough to buy a mount
(which I usually am able to afford at around level 46), you'll find sufficient
weapon/armor from mob drops and quest rewards. The only thing I do buy from the
auction hall is scopes, better bags, better ammo/arrow bags, and maybe a better
bow/gun, that's it.
Benefits of questing over just grinding
The benefits of questing over
grinding includes the ability to spend a lot of time flying/riding around
turning in quests or moving to the next area. This allows you to
take breaks to eat (in RL) or whatever. If you're grinding, you have to be there
non-stop. Questing also prepares you for dungeons more effectively by
allowing you to be able to accept the quests for them since most perquisites are
done throughout the leveling guides. Questing also dramatically increases
faction reputation more than grinding. Questing has you jumping around
from zone to zone killing different types of mobs and doing different types of
quests, thus reducing boredom tremendously.
Change WoW's default camera
Turn off auto camera and use your mouse to manually adjust your vision. Also crank up your mouse sensitivity high, so you can look around much faster.
Practice makes perfect
I can't stress this enough, the more times you go
through the game to 60, the faster you get at it, it's as simple as that.
Hunter specific tips/tricks:
Before taming a pet, lay down a freezing trap, so the mob freezes solid for a while, instead of having it hit you repeatedly. You can also use Scorpid Sting and Aspect of the Monkey to reduce damage. Also teach Growl to all newly tamed pets, as it costs no training points for that.
Keep your pet busy
While drinking, have your pet start attacking something. When your pet
is done attacking the current mob, immediately have him go to the next one.
Making bandages while your pet is attacking a mob is a great tactic, especially
if you make one or two bandages at the start of a mob fight so your pet can hold
aggro without needing to use growl.
Learn to use Immolation traps a lot
One method I use through out the
whole game is: lay down an immolation trap, then serpent sting a mob, have that
mob run into the immolation trap, while that mob is taking damage and im tanking
it, me and my pet are killing another mob.
Doing this also preps you for Beserking more (if you are troll).
Stop casters from healing themselves
If a mob has the ability to heal himself, use Intimidation to stop them
from healing. (Or scatter-shot if you're MM specd)
Use a Feed Pet Macro
Use a macro to feed your pet, this saves time and frustration.
Here is the macro:
For 1.12 Client:
/cast Feed Pet
/script PickupContainerItem (0,1);
For Classic WoW:
/cast Feed Pet
/cast [pet] 0 1
Your food must be in a specific bag slot, which is bag 0, slot 1 (and you can change that by editing the macro if you like).
Consistently use all your hunter's abilities
Use BW/Rapid Fire/Arcane
Shot, as soon as the cooldown is up every time. Use a UI add-on that help you
see the cooldowns better (like what I use, which is called Cooldown Count mod).
Keep in mind, Arcane Shot is considered one of the worst mana wasters for hunters, so lay off this ability through out the game, especially at levels right before updating your drink to the next tier: 24, 33-34, 42-44 and 53 - until you get Enriched Manna Biscuits.
Use more Multi-shots!
Multi-shot single mobs (or even players in PVP). Multi-shots adds an
extra shot (similar to arcane shot) in the shoot cycle. Through out the
game check and see if your multi-shots are doing more damage per mana than
arcane shots, if so, use multi-shots more often (even on single mobs).
Also keep in mind the more enemies you can hit with one multi-shot the greater
the mana use you will get out of it.
Mend Pet Vs Bandage Pet?
Use bandages to heal your pets sometimes instead of using mend pet, this
saves your mana, and (depending on the bandage) can heal more HPs up.
Make bandages between auto-shots
THIS IS NOT WORKING IN CLASSIC WOW:
You can make a bandage between auto-shots, and this especially becomes more
efficient when your gun/bow has a slower attack speed. This makes the
First Aid profession more worth it due to reduced downtime building it up.
Use high DPS pets
I personally use a cat as my main pet mainly because it does the most DPS out of
all pets. In TBC, Ravagers are generally the best pets and for WotLK
wolves tend to be the best.
Use pets with high attack speed
NOTE: This does not apply to TBC+ as all pets have equal attack speed (but it does apply to vanilla/Era): Pets with higher attack speeds are more efficient because they can interrupt
casters in PVP more effectively. Higher attack speeds
also work great with the Frenzy Talent, which can help you level faster for PVE. Early on,
The Rake
(rare lion mob) is a "prized"
hunter pet early on with his uniquely high 1.2 attack speed. Unfortunately
he is only found in Mulgore above Thunder bluff.
Later on you can tame Broken Tooth in Badlands. This level 37 rare cat is special because it has the fastest attack speed out of any pets in Classic WoW. Faster attack speeds work great with the Frenzy talent.
Tips for Soloing Elites
One of the biggest tips for soloing
tough elites is using the Mend Pet ability. Keeping your pet constantly
healed during a solo fight with an Elite will keep the Elite away from you and
ensure your success at killing it.
Another good way to kill tough elites is to first not use any pet aggro abilities on the elite, use Wing Clip on the Elite, then run away from it with Aspect of the Cheetah while stopping occasionally to fire auto-shots at him along with other damage abilities. During this time your pet can do DPS while you hold aggro to have The elite slowly follow you. Near the end of the fight you can then use Intimidation and nuke the elite with Rapid Fire and other shooting abilities.
Use the Mailbox for ammo/food Storage
Not Allowed In Unofficial Hardcore: Depending on what you are using, from
your bank/AH alt send ammo or arrows to your main so if you need them you can
stop at the mailbox to pick them up as not all towns will carry ammo or arrows.
This same thing applies for pet food.
Aspect of the Cheetah Vs Mount Speed
Traveling with Aspect of the cheetah
(with 2/2 Pathfinding talent) is faster than mounting up (with lvl 40 mount) and
moving with the mount for the first 25 seconds. After 25 seconds the mount
catches up and
becomes slightly faster.
Keep Growl off auto-cast
You only need to manually use Growl once per fight, anymore will be wasting energy
that could be used for damage abilities such as Claw. Sometimes you don't
need to use Growl at all, such as when you need to drink or make a bandage while your pet is
attacking something first, or if you are trying to kite a mob around the map.
Understand how Auto-shot works
Keep in mind that auto-shot's
cooldown happens during many other activities, such as when moving and using
other abilities. This means learn to get better at auto-shooting while
moving around. You do this by stopping briefly to fire another shot, then
moving again. The attack speed of your weapon will determine how often you
will need to move and then stop to shoot.
Opt for a slow attack speed for Bows/Guns
For PvE 1-60 speed leveling I find that slower the better for bow/gun attack
speed. Slower attack speeds will allow you to eat through ammo much slower,
this saves money and less bag space needed to carry the ammo. Slower
attack speeds will allow you to have more time for movement between shots (see
previous tip), this will make it easier to move around while shooting, especially
if you have rapid fire on, quick shots, beserking etc. Slower attack speed
will allow you to use your increased time between shots to make a bandage
without losing much shooting time (this is huge!). Slower attack speed
works better with abilities such as Aimed Shot, or things like picking up quest
objects in-between shots, etc..
The only benefits for a faster attack speed would be to better interrupt casters for PvP, but overall for speedleveling, slower the better. If anyone has more input about bow/gun attack speed that I did not include here please let me know!
Alliance Hunters should consider sticking with Two-Handed
Swords Mostly
The reason why I say this is because Alliance Hunters can solo the level
35 Elite mob in Duskwood at level 28
which will give you a nice Two-Handed
Sword that you can use for a long while.
Bow Vs Gun, what is better?
Is there a difference? There is not much of a difference here. If you are a troll, then remember you have the bow racial specialization which
gives you +5 to bow skill, and if you are a dwarf you have +5 to gun racial
specialization. But those are the main things to consider. Which
means if you are a troll and find a gun that is only slightly better in stats,
then your bow might still be better overall due to your bow racial boost.
Minor considerations include the actual sound you will hear constantly when firing. I find I like the bow sounds better as they are more pleasant to the ears, but this does not effect gameplay. Both guns and bows allows scopes to be attached to them.
Troll Vs Orc Hunter
I get asked a lot why I choose troll rather than orc for a hunter.
The racial bonuses between orc and troll are pretty much an even choice. But there were things I considered here:
- I do believe the troll Berserking ability can be a life saver, but the orc's 5% pet damage is not really much of a life saver.
- I like hearing bow sounds better than gun sounds, so having the +5 to bow racial helps to increase the chance to stick with bows.
- Blood Fury for Orcs is nice, but so is the 10% health regeneration for trolls.
- A lot of hunters neglect the troll's +5 beast damage. A large portion of the mobs you will be grinding from 1-60 will be beasts, so this is a huge plus.
- Orc's Hardiness racial to reduce stuns does decrease downtime and is also helpful for them.
- One drawback for troll hunters is that the Throwing Specialization racial is a waste.
- I simply like the looks of trolls better, but this is purely opinion.
- I may do a 1-60 speedrun with an Orc sometime though!
